Jun 16, 2012 - Checkers fly for Johnson, Mass, Bowers, Pogones and Halls
Ogilvie Raceway
By: R.J. Sahlstrom (June 15)
Early in the day if you said the whole program at Ogilvie Raceway would be totally dry, everyone would think you were crazy. Every rain cell and cloud in the sky dissipated by race time and the races would go on as scheduled. Earning a trip to victory lane in the WISSOTA Dirt Track Racing Series were Brett Johnson, Dave Mass, Ryan Bowers, Justin Pogones and Matt Halls.
An excellent field of the Upper Midwest Sprintcar Series winged warriors was featured on the program at the “Big O”. Tony Norem would survive a deflating left rear tire on his way to the checkers in the A-Main.
The WISSOTA Modifieds were led to green in the main event by Jason Voigt and Keith Tourville. Voigt blasted out to the lead on the first circuit and would drive a masterful race while leading the first fifteen laps. Brett Johnson then made an excellent pass by Voigt to take the lead on lap sixteen. He would lead the rest of the laps in the Johnson Auto sponsored ride in the race that went flag to flag. Filling out the top five were Voigt, Dave Mass, Jody Bellefeuille and JB Stortz.
Modified heat race victories were claimed by Mass and Stortz.
Leading the WISSOTA Super Stock field to green in the Feature were Andy Davey and Brandon Englund. Davey led the race briefly for one lap when he was passed on the next round by Dave Mass who started outside row four. Mass took command of the race at that point. He survived four restarts due to cautions scattered throughout the remainder of the race earning a trip to victory lane in the Shaw Trucking ride for the second consecutive week. He was followed by Josh Anderson, Dan Gullikson, Mike Loomis and Adam Ayotte.
The Super Stock heat race wins went to Gullikson and Davey.
Brandon Hines and Brandon Bombardo would set the pace on row one for the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. Hines grabbed the first lead of the main event as he led the first six circuits. Ryan Bowers then passed Hines for the lead on lap seven from a row four start. He survived three restarts scattered throughout the remaining laps to finish a clean sweep in the Moments by Melissa entry. Chasing him at the checkers were Justin Oestreich (from 10th), Jason VandeKamp (from 9th), Jeremy Nelson (from 13th) and Mack Estey.
The Midwest Modified heat winners were Charlie Zander, Bowers and Estey.
Leading the WISSOTA Street Stock field to the feature green were Mark Voigt and Kyle Howland. Jim Gullikson took the first lead for the first four circuits. Keith Tourville took the next shot at the checkers as he led through lap seven. Gullikson regained the lead on lap eight and would hold it until he was passed again by Tourville on lap ten. Gullikson then took his third lead of the event as he led lap twelve. Justin Pogones would become the final leader as he passed Gullikson on lap thirteen and never looked back. He completed the sweep in the AJ’s Complete Automotive sponsored ride followed by Tourville, Gullikson, Kurt Becken (from 12th) and Howland.
The Street Stock heat checkers were taken by current National Rookie point leader, Brad Schmidt and Pogones.
On the front row for the WISSOTA Mod-4 feature were Andrew Kresal and Nick Jelacie. Kresal took the early lead in the event for the first three laps. Matt Halls then passed Kresal for the lead on lap four and never looked back. The entire event went without a single caution. Halls took the Yarmon Ford car to the checkers trailed by Kyle Thell, Kresal, Jelacie and Chad Funt.
Thell won the heat race in the Mod-4 class.
The Hornet heat races were won by Quain Busitsky and Matthew Dibb. Quain Busitsky finished a clean sweep as he took the checkers for the second week in a row in the Feature.
The next event at Ogilvie Raceway will be a regular race program on Saturday June 23rd. The first green flag drops at 6:30pm. If you are looking for some exciting dirt track racing on a Saturday night, come to the “BIG O” for dirt track racing at its finest.
